Power System Earthing

Earthing  Protection Study

The Earthing Protection Study normally begins with a comprehensive ground study. Here, measurements are taken related to ground conductivity and ohmic values and associated conditions.

Such a ground study of necessity, can suggest measurements that may take the Study into locations other than that directly concerning the purchaser of the study, for example, adjacent farmers fields!

For every power system there needs to be a complimentary earthing system. To complete such a study, knowledge of the fault level, normally from the DNO is required.

This, together with the local ground conditions and the supply capacity is of necessity when preparing such a study.

The Earthing Protection Study will comprise time, devoted to site measurements, and then a subsequent time in the office utilising software, for example CDEGS (A comprehensive Earthing Solution Software Package) to eventually forward an adequate earthing design

Earth Potential Rise and Touch and Step Voltages

An Earth Potential Rise (EPR) Calculation, (also known as Rise of Earth Potential ROEP) and the associated touch and step voltage calculations are of key importance to ensure site safety. Power system earthing is a complex, iterative design process which needs to determine the soil resistivity, DNO fault levels and then the associated EPR and touch and step voltages. If these values are too high then there is a very real safety risk to personnel

Earthing Design & Conductor Sizing

MCS can undertake a complete earthing design with the aim of ensuring that all items of equipment are correctly earthed with the right sized conductors and earth nest layout to suit the site conditions and therefore maintain the safety of personnel
